Congress MP vows legal fight against eviction order
MEERUT, July 19 -- A legal and political battle has intensified over an eviction order issued against a mosque located within the Saharanpur collectorate premises. Congress MP Imran Masood said the mosque would not be demolished and promised to pursue all legal remedies, including approaching the Supreme Court if necessary.
The controversy stems from an order passed by the city magistrate's court on July 16, which held that a 315-square metre portion of the mosque was an encroachment on government land within the collectorate complex.
The court directed the mosque management to remove the encroachment within 30 days, deposit about Rs.6.41 crore as compensation and warned that the administration would carry out forcible eviction if the order was not complied with. The mosque management has announced it will challenge the order before the Allahabad HC.
Masood questioned the basis of the order, saying it appeared to be "more administrative and governmental than judicial". He argued that ownership of any property could not be established solely on the basis of revenue records and demanded that all ownership-related papers be made public. htc...
