Cong to kick off poll outreach from hill distts
Dehradun, June 21 -- The state Congress unit on Saturday announced the launch of its 'Parivartan Sankalp Sammelan' campaign, under which leaders will travel across assembly constituencies to highlight alleged "failures" of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government and mobilise party workers ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections in 2027.
Addressing a joint press conference at the state Congress headquarters in Dehradun, election campaign committee chairman Pritam Singh said the campaign was being launched at a time when inflation was at its peak, unemployment was troubling youths, women were feeling insecure and corruption was widespread.
"In the first phase, the party will focus on hill constituencies, which have been divided into four zones," Singh said.
State party chief Ganesh Godiyal, along with MLAs Mayukh Mahar and Harish Dhami and senior leader Khushal Singh Adhikari, will cover Zone 1, where the programme will be held between June 28 and July 2, he added. Zone 1 includes Champawat, Lohaghat, Pithoragarh, Didihat, Dharchula, Gangolihat, Bageshwar and Kapkot assembly segments.
Election management committee chairman Harak Singh Rawat, along with Surendra Singh Negi, Shurveer Singh Sajwan, MLA Lakhpat Singh Butola, former MLA Jeet Ram and Manoj Rawat will cover Zone 2- Yamkeshwar, Kotdwar, Lansdowne, Chaubattakhal, Srinagar, Pauri, Rudraprayag, Kedarnath, Badrinath, Tharali and Karnaprayag constituencies- between June 28 and July 7. Senior leader and Chakrata MLA Pritam Singh, deputy leader of opposition Bhuvan Kapri and MLA Vikram Singh Negi will cover Zone 3 between June 28 and July 7.
The zone includes Purola, Yamunotri, Gangotri, Pratapnagar, Ghansali, Tehri, Narendra Nagar, Devprayag and Dhanaulti, said Singh,
Zone 4 will be headed by former state Congress president Karan Mahara along with former assembly speaker Govind Singh Kunjwal, MLAs Manoj Tiwari and Madan Bisht, and senior leader Sumit Hridayesh.
The programme will begin on June 29 and continue till July 9, covering Haldwani, Lalkuan, Kaladhungi, Bhimtal, Nainital, Ramnagar, Jageshwar, Almora, Someshwar, Dwarahat, Ranikhet and Salt constituencies.
Singh said each assembly segment would host workers' conferences, public meetings, interactions with party cadres and protest programmes. He added that former chief minister Harish Rawat and leader of opposition Yashpal Arya could participate in programmes in any of the four zones.
Speaking on the occasion, Godiyal alleged that the BJP government was steeped in corruption and claimed that people associated with the ruling party had gained control over the state's resources.
"Today, mining leases and crusher units are largely in the hands of those who support the BJP, while those who do not support the ruling party are deprived of opportunities," he alleged.
He asked the media to give adequate attention to the issues raised by the Congress, saying the media had an important role in ensuring accountability from those in power.
"Those being made scapegoats in corruption cases should speak out and expose the bigger players. Small fish are being caught while the crocodiles remain outside," he said....
