PRAYAGRAJ, June 15 -- Ashfaq Ahmed, Prayagraj district unit president of the Congress, was allegedly placed under house arrest on Sunday as the party intensified its "Save Great Nicobar" signature campaign across the Gangapar region of the Sangam city, triggering protests and anger among party workers, the party said in a communique. According to Congress leaders, the campaign has been running in tehsils, blocks and key market areas, drawing participation from locals. Party members claimed the administration acted after the campaign gained attention. After news of Ahmed's detention spread on social media, a large number of Congress workers gathered at the party office in Sikandra to protest the move. Addressing party workers, Ahmed criticised the state government, alleging that democratic rights were being curtailed. He accused the administration of using police action to suppress dissent and said those raising public issues were being targeted.
