LUCKNOW, May 21 -- The Uttar Pradesh Anti Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) arrested an alleged drug trafficker from Mirzapur and seized more than 13,000 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup valued at nearly Rs.1.6 crore, officials said on Wednesday. The accused, identified as Ajay Kumar Yadav alias Ajit (32), a resident of Koila Bazar area in Varanasi, was arrested by the ANTF Lucknow unit during a raid conducted on Lohandi Road in the Katra Kotwali area of Mirzapur on Tuesday. According to police, the ANTF team recovered 13,074 bottles of ONEREX 100ML codeine cough syrup packed in 109 cartons, amounting to 1,307.4 litres of narcotic substance. Apart from the contraband, officials also seized a four-wheeler, a motorcycle, an Apple iPhone and Rs.450 in cash. A case under sections 8/21/25 of the NDPS Act has been registered at Katra Kotwali police station in Mirzapur. The accused allegedly confessed that he had been involved in illegal trafficking of narcotic cough syrup for a considerable period along with his associates.
