Dehradun, Sept. 27 -- Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Saturday called for a collective fight against drug abuse in Punjab, saying the battle was essential to protect the state's youth and future generations. Addressing a public meeting at Mukerian in rural Hoshiarpur in Punjab as part of the BJP's 'Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra', Dhami said the campaign was aimed at taking the message against drugs to people across the state and turning it into a mass movement. "This is not a yatra to seek votes. It is a yatra to save the young children of mothers," Dhami said. He said the objective was to protect Punjab's youth and restore the state's pride and identity. Dhami, said the fight against drugs could not be left to any one political party or government. He urged people, particularly the youth, to join the campaign for a drug-free Punjab. "I have come with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's message and a resolve to make Punjab drug-free. Our party is running a campaign against drugs and striving to reach every household and every individual," Dhami said. He also targeted the Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab, alleging that it had failed to fulfil its promise of making the state drug-free within three months. "The AAP government had promised to make Punjab a drug-free state within three months, but the situation today is unfortunate," Dhami said. He also alleged that those raising their voices against drugs were being harassed. Dhami said Punjab, which he described as the land of Gurus, heroes and martyrs, could not allow its youth to fall into drug addiction. He stressed that action against drug trafficking networks needed to be accompanied by awareness, treatment and rehabilitation for those already affected by addiction. He said the central government, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was pursuing a comprehensive approach to the issue, combining action against drug trafficking and associated networks with prevention, awareness, treatment and rehabilitation. "Under PM Modi's leadership, all pledges have been fulfilled, be it the abrogation of Article 370 or the elimination of terrorism and Naxalism. Similarly, drug abuse will be eradicated from Punjab as well," Dhami said. The 13-day 'Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra', launched on September 18, comprises four simultaneous yatras covering nearly 4,000 km across all 117 assembly constituencies. The campaign is scheduled to culminate in Jalandhar on September 30. Dhami said a drug-free Punjab should be seen not merely as a campaign but as a collective pledge to secure the future of the state's youth....
