Class 9 girl killed in tractor hit-and-run; mob attacks police
PRAYAGRAJ, May 7 -- A 13-year-old schoolgirl died after being hit by a tractor loaded with bricks while cycling to school in Pratapgarh on Wednesday morning, triggering a violent protest. The victim, Roshni, a class 9 student and a resident of Damdam village under Raniganj police station, was on her way to school around 8.15 am when the tractor hit her near the village. She suffered a severe head injury and died on the spot.
The driver fled, leaving the vehicle behind. Angry villagers gathered at the site, blocked the road and accused the driver of rash driving. Some tried to set the tractor on fire. Police reached the spot but were attacked by the crowd when they tried to stop the damage. Some personnel were in plain clothes, which added to the confusion. Later, additional force reached the spot and pacified the crowd after assuring action. Police said the tractor has been seized and a case has been registered. Efforts are on to arrest the driver.
A 23-year-old man died and his younger sister was critically injured after a car hit their motorcycle in Kaushambi on Wednesday afternoon. The accident took place near Sarpathahi village under Paschimsharira police station when the siblings were returning from a wedding.
The car allegedly hit the motorcycle from behind, throwing both onto the road.
The deceased was identified as Ankit Singh ,23, a resident of Chitrakoot district. His sister Neha Patel ,19, sustained injuries. Locals rushed him to a hospital where doctors declared Ankit dead on arrival. Neha is undergoing treatment. Police have sent the body for post-mortem examination and said further action will follow after investigation.
A 38-year-old man died after falling ill at his in-laws' house in the Lalganj area of Pratapgarh. His mother has alleged that he consumed poison due to harassment by his wife. The deceased, Ramu Verma, had gone to his in-laws' home in Madhukarpur on Tuesday. His condition suddenly worsened in the evening. He was taken to a trauma centre where doctors declared him dead on arrival. His mother alleged that he was being harassed and was under mental stress. She has submitted a written complaint to the police. Police said the body has been sent for post-mortem and further action will be taken based on the report.
A 35-year-old e-rickshaw driver died in Pratapgarh on Wednesday after jumping into a well to escape an alleged attack following a road accident in the Udaipur police station area.
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening when Surendra Verma, a resident of Tila Bhagat Ka Purwa in Pratapgarh, was returning home in his e-rickshaw. Near a turn close to his village, his vehicle collided head-on with a motorcycle ridden by Anarul, a meat vendor who was carrying a goat.
An argument broke out between the two after the collision, but locals intervened, pacified both sides, and sent them away. Police said the matter escalated later when Anarul allegedly went to Surendra's house with four or five associates, abused him, and chased him with the intention of assaulting him.
Fearing for his life, Surendra tried to flee and jumped into a nearby well. Seeing this, the accused fled the spot.
Based on a written complaint filed by the deceased's brother, police have registered a case against Anarul and four to five unidentified persons for abetment of suicide....
