Clashes mar student elections at MBPG college in Haldwani
Haldwani, Sept. 30 -- Voting at Haldwani's MBPG College , the largest college in the Kumaon region, concluded amid clashes and heavy police deployment on Tuesday, with 31.74% of registered students casting their votes during the five-hour polling period.
Polling began at 9 am, with 12,800 students registered at the college. The administration arranged 18 polling booths, including eight for male and 10 for female students. Police declared the double-lane road leading to Nainital in front of the college a "zero zone" to regulate traffic and prevent any untoward incident.
Heavy police deployment was made at the college's main entrance, while staff checked students' identity cards before allowing entry into the campus.
The election witnessed a three-way contest between ABVP candidate Dheeraj Bisht, NSUI candidate Mehul Shah and independent candidate Aryan Belwal. During the first hour, only 2.20% of the total votes were cast, said people in the know.
Tensions escalated during the second hour when a scuffle broke out between ABVP candidate Dheeraj Bisht and independent candidate Aryan Belwal. BJP district president Pratap Bisht also reached the spot and campaigned in support of the ABVP candidate. Congress MLA Sumit Hridayesh also arrived with NSUI supporters and led a rally.
A confrontation took place between police personnel and the MLA as security arrangements were being enforced outside the college.
Radhe Gupta, a supporter of secretary candidate Sarthak Rastogi, was allegedly assaulted by a rival group shortly after voting concluded. He sustained serious head injuries, said police....
