Clash erupts as protesters try to assault accused at Patti CHC; police intervene
PRATAPGARH, May 20 -- Tension prevailed in Patti town of Pratapgarh district after members of Hindu organisations allegedly attempted to pull an accused out of a police vehicle and assault him following his arrest in connection with the abduction of a teenage girl on Tuesday.
According to police, the accused was taken into custody after the missing minor was rescued from Ayodhya.
According to the family, the 17-year-old girl from a village under Patti Kotwali limits went to the market on April 8 but did not return home. Her mother later filed a complaint against a youth who was allegedly in contact with the girl over phone calls.
During the investigation, police identified the accused as a shopkeeper from a minority community who operates a garment store in Patti town.
The family alleged that he lured the girl into a relationship, abducted her, and later sold her in Delhi. They also claimed that although the girl was recovered from Ayodhya, police did not record her statement before a court.
Police on Tuesday took the accused to the community health centre (CHC) for medical examination before producing him in court. However, members of Hindu organisations reached the hospital premises and created a ruckus, demanding strict action. Protesters allegedly tried to pull the accused out of the police vehicle and assault him.
During the commotion, a scuffle reportedly broke out between the protesters and police personnel, including sub-inspectors Vijay Kumar Yadav, Ravindra Singh and Prashant Katiyar, along with constable Mukesh Tripathi. Police said one of the sub-inspectors was manhandled and his hand was twisted during the altercation.
After receiving information about the situation, station house officer (SHO) Anandpal Bhadauria reached the spot with additional force and escorted the accused safely back to the police station.
Members of Hindu organisations continued sloganeering and protests from the CHC to the police station premises.
Circle officer Manoj Kumar Raghuvanshi later reached the police station and pacified the protesters by assuring them of strict action against the accused.
The situation is under control now and further legal action in the case is underway, he said.
Police also sealed the accused's garment shop to collect evidence in connection with the alleged abduction, trafficking and rape case. Locals alleged that the accused had earlier also trapped girls visiting the shop for shopping purposes....
