LUCKNOW, July 30 -- Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee (Civil) Hospital is set to establish a dedicated 10-bed Neurosurgery Unit, apart from premier institutes including King George's Medical University (KGMU), Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) and Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS). Civil hospital director Dr GP Gupta said the new unit will cater to patients with head injuries, spinal disorders, spinal surgeries and neurotrauma, reducing referrals to tertiary care hospitals and improving access to timely neurosurgical treatment. A neurosurgeon, Dr Vinod Kumar Tiwari, has already been posted at the hospital, while work to operationalise the unit is underway. The addition is expected to ease the patient load at Lucknow's major super-speciality hospitals, which currently handle most neurosurgical emergencies. KGMU has the largest neurosurgical capacity among the three institutions, with around 170 beds dedicated to neurology and neurosurgery services. Its neurology department has 60-beds ward, a four-bed ICU and 12 beds at the Trauma Centre, while the neurosurgery department has 72-beds ward and 56 Trauma Centre beds....
