Civil hospital director's chance intervention saves woman with blocked airway
LUCKNOW, Aug. 23 -- A chance intervention by the director of Syama Prasad Mukherjee (Civil) Hospital helped save the life of a Lucknow woman after a piece of plastic during dental treatment became lodged in her airway following vomiting.
Harshita Mayani was rushed to the hospital's emergency ward on August 20 after she suddenly began vomiting. She was initially given medication to control the vomiting but soon developed severe breathing difficulty.
Hospital director Dr GP Gupta said his official duty hours were over and he was on his way home when he noticed Harshita's condition while passing through the emergency ward. "I suddenly noticed that her nails were turning blue and she was not breathing. I immediately went to her and started CPR," he said.
Harshita was quickly shifted to the ICU, where doctors examined her airway and found a piece of particle lodged inside. Attempts to remove it through suction failed, after which the object was pushed towards the stomach.
Doctors also found that pulse (dal) water had entered her lungs during vomiting. Dr Gupta cleared the fluid from her airway and lungs. Her condition improved and she was eventually able to breathe normally without assistance.
"I am thankful that the doctors noticed my condition in time and treated me immediately," said Harshita who was discharged on Saturday evening.
Dr Gupta said, "After the patient condition got stabled, we found that it was the part of RCT of her tooth that got stuck."htc...
