LUCKNOW, Aug. 18 -- About 49.7 mm of rainfall was recorded in the city in the last 48 hours, said senior meteorological scientist Mohammad Danish. On Monday, the city recorded 8.8 mm of rainfall. Malihabad received the maximum rainfall at 17.5 mm while the Bani station received the lowest rainfall at 3 mm. Light and moderate rainfall is expected in Lucknow till August 23. "Light and moderate rainfall is expected in Lucknow over the next few days while heavy rainfall is expected in Terai and Southern parts of the state adjoining Madhya Pradesh," said Danish. The rain was thanks to a depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas of West Bengal. The weather office further said the depression is very likely to move northwestwards. It will cross Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand and Bihar in the next 24 hours. The weatherman said that two separate cyclonic circulations in the lower troposphere over eastern Uttar Pradesh and northern Haryana, along with a northward shift of the western end of the monsoon trough, are driving the weather. Coupled with favourable conditions in the mid-tropospheric shear zone, this pattern will keep the state under active monsoon conditions. "Heavy rain at isolated places is predicted for the next 48 hours which will intensify from August 19. While very heavy rain is likely at isolated places in east Uttar Pradesh on August 20-21," said another meteorological scientist Atul Kumar Singh....
