Child on whom plaster fell in Agra's SNMC dies; principal says death due to disease
Agra, Aug. 23 -- A 10-year-old child, on whom plaster from the ceiling fell on Friday, while he was admitted to the children's section of the emergency ward of SN Medical College and Hospital, Agra, died early on Saturday morning.
After the incident, the injured child had been shifted to the ICU, and more than a dozen other children were shifted to the paediatric department of SN Medical College later on Friday.
In a press statement, the principal of SN Medical College and Hospital, Dr Prashant Gupta said, "The child was a patient of cerebral palsy since the age of 5 months. 'West Syndrome', a disease, was diagnosed in him at AIIMS Delhi when he was 11 months old. He was facing development delays and on August 19, he was admitted to SN Medical College with four-day-old fever and trouble breathing. He was in a serious condition and was subjected to blood tests, CT Scan, X ray etc.
"He was kept on high flow oxygen and was given blood transfusion besides strong antibiotics but with his health deteriorating further, Umair was placed on ventilator on August 21 at 7 pm but died at 6 am on Saturday.
The body of the child was taken away by the family who refused in writing to get a post-mortem examination done despite it being suggested by college authorities."
He said that the injury caused by falling plaster was on the forearm, causing bruises only and thus was not the cause of death.
When the plaster had fallen on Umair Khan, 10, of Nasirabad colony of Agra, there were 15 patients in the ward. Panic gripped caretakers and all children were shifted.
"We got Umair admitted to the ICU and had a CT Scan done; the scan showed no injury. The unfortunate death of the child was because of the disease he was suffering from," he said.
When contacted, a family member said that the death was caused by pneumonia suffered by the child but denied to talk any further about injuries sustained because of plaster falling.
