haldwani, Sept. 27 -- The Char Dham Yatra was suspended from the afternoon of September 26 to September 27 amid an adverse weather forecast, as several parts of Uttarakhand received light to heavy rainfall, and snowfall was reported at Hemkund Sahib in Chamoli district on Saturday. Anand Swarup, commissioner, Garhwal, said in an order that the "Char Dham Yatra will remain suspended during the period following a weather alert issued by the Meteorological Centre, which warned of heavy rainfall and hazardous travel conditions along the pilgrimage routes". The suspension was imposed as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of pilgrims arriving from across India and abroad, officials said. Following a red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Uttarkashi district administration also temporarily suspended the pilgrimage to Gangotri and Yamunotri Dham for two days. Pilgrim movement was stopped at designated transit holding points at Heena on the Gangotri route and Dobata on the Yamunotri route. Meanwhile, a 38-year-old Army Naib Subedar was swept away by the strong current of the Kosi river while bathing in Betalghat area of Nainital district on Friday evening, police said. His body was recovered around three kilometres downstream after a search by police, SDRF personnel and local residents. SP Crime Dr Jagdish Chandra identified the deceased as Prithvi Pal Singh Rawat, a native of Kunsyari village in Dwarahat, Almora.
