Chain-snatching accused injured in police encounter in Pratapgarh
Prayagraj, March 23 -- A man accused of chain-snatching was injured and arrested after a police encounter in Pratapgarh district on Sunday morning. A police constable was also hurt during the incident.
The accused, identified as Vipin Singh, was earlier arrested by Lalganj police in connection with a chain-snatching case. He was later taken by Leelapur police to recover a stolen chain linked to another case.
Police said Singh was involved in two chain-snatching incidents. In one case in Leelapur, two men on a motorcycle entered a primary school in Puranpur Khajur village. They threatened a teacher with a gun and tried to snatch her chain. The teacher resisted, and the chain broke. The men fled with a part of it.
Lalganj police identified Singh with the help of CCTV footage. A reward of Rs.25,000 had also been announced for his arrest. He is a resident of Sangrampur in Amethi.
During questioning, Singh told police that he had hidden part of the stolen chain near the Sai river, close to Kamaura village.
On Sunday morning, a police team took him there for recovery. Police said Singh suddenly took out a country-made pistol and opened fire. Constable Rajkumar Singh was shot in the hand. The police then fired back and injured the accused below the knee.
Both the accused and the injured constable were taken to Lalganj Trauma Centre for treatment.
Police recovered the weapon used in the attack and part of the stolen chain from the spot. Officials said Singh has a criminal record with at least eight cases registered against him in Amethi and Pratapgarh. He will be sent to jail after he is discharged from hospital....
