CBI searches Knp home of CGST officer held in Rs 2L bribery case
LUCKNOW, Oct. 12 -- The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) recovered Rs 72.50 lakh in cash and documents related to immovable properties during searches at the Kanpur and Bhopal premises of a Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) superintendent arrested in an alleged Rs 2 lakh bribery case, the agency said on Sunday.
The searches were conducted at the premises of Rajesh Kumar, superintendent in the Preventive Branch (headquarters) of the CGST and Central Excise Commissionerate in Bhopal.
The CBI has not disclosed the amount of cash recovered separately from his Kanpur residence or details of the properties mentioned in the seized documents, including their location, value and ownership.
Kumar was arrested on Saturday after the CBI allegedly caught him accepting a bribe of Rs 2 lakh. The agency registered a case following allegations that he had demanded a monthly payment of Rs 2 lakh from the proprietor of a Bhopal-based scrap trading firm.
According to the CBI, the alleged bribe was sought in exchange for not intercepting vehicles transporting scrap material and not obstructing the complainant's business.
After registering the case, the agency laid a trap and arrested Kumar while he was allegedly accepting the bribe. Searches were subsequently conducted at his residential premises in Kanpur and Bhopal, leading to the recovery of cash and property-related documents.
The CBI has not specified whether the documents relate to properties in Kanpur or elsewhere, or whether the assets have any direct connection with the alleged bribery.
The investigation is continuing, the agency said....
