Car drags cyclist 100 feet, victim dies
Meerut, July 7 -- A 40-year-old man returning home from work was killed after a car hit his bicycle and dragged him for nearly 100 feet in Meerut district on Sunday evening. The entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras, and police have launched a manhunt to trace the absconding driver.
The accident occurred at around 6 pm in the Brahmpuri police station area. As per police, the car was travelling at high speed from Noon Nagar towards the railway crossing when it hit Sanjay Kumar, a resident of the area, at Gurjar Chowk while he was cycling home after work.
The impact threw Sanjay under the vehicle, and instead of stopping, the driver allegedly continued to drag him for around 100 feet. The driver eventually halted the car, stepped out to inspect the situation, and leaving the car behind, fled on foot. Sanjay Kumar was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The victim's death sparked outrage among family members, who reached the hospital and staged a protest. Sanjay's wife refused to accept the body until the accused driver was arrested.
Senior police officials assured the grieving family that the accused would be identified and arrested at the earliest. Following it, the family agreed to allow the body to be sent for a post-mortem examination.
