LUCKNOW, June 9 -- In a major enforcement drive on Monday, the transport department intercepted a private sleeper bus on the Purvanchal Expressway carrying passengers more than four times its permitted capacity. Officials found 167 passengers, including women and children, packed inside the vehicle, with some even travelling on the roof. The action was carried out by a team led by Alok Yadav, ARTO, enforcement, who stopped bus number UP 11 BT 0077 during a checking drive. Preliminary inspection revealed that the vehicle's permit had expired and its fitness certificate had failed. The bus was operating on a long-distance route from Bihar to Patiala in Punjab via Muzaffarnagar and Saharanpur. The bus was registered in Saharanpur but was allegedly being operated illegally between Bihar and Punjab. Officials said the vehicle had already covered nearly 400 kilometres before being intercepted in the state capital.
