LUCKNOW, March 23 -- The Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) passed its 2026-27 budget within around 45 minutes of convening the House on Sunday, triggering sharp protests from opposition corporators who alleged that the civic body rushed the process without discussion on the budget.
Mayor Sushma Kharkwal convened the session at 12:13 pm and declared the budget passed at 12:35 pm. The House was adjourned at 1:03 pm amid continued sloganeering, leaving key concerns over transparency and due process in the civic body's functioning.
The move immediately drew objections from opposition members, who alleged that the House bypassed deliberations and failed to follow due procedure.
Samajwadi Party corporator Sayyed Yawar Hussain 'Reshu' termed the development 'unprecedented', claiming that the civic body passed a budget without debate for the first time in decades. Congress corporator Mukesh Singh Chauhan said members had not received copies of the budget documents, making meaningful participation impossible.
The situation turned chaotic when LMC vice president Charanjit Singh Gandhi began reading the budget speech, prompting Congress corporators to protest inside the House. A heated exchange followed after BJP corporator Anurag Mishra made remarks targeting opposition members....
