BSV convocation: Female studentsdominate, to get 33 of 48 medals
LUCKNOW, July 10 -- Thirty-three out of the total 48 medals (69%) will go to female students during the 16th convocation ceremony of the Bhatkhande Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya (BSV) to be held on July 15. The medals include 30 gold, 9 silver, and 9 bronze, said convocation coordinator Prof Srishti Mathur.
Prof Mandavi Singh, vice chancellor of the BSV, announced the names of the medal winners during a press conference on Thursday. Shweta Gupta, an MPA (Kathak) student, has bagged highest seven gold medals. Neha Qazi, an MPA (guitar) student, has won five gold medals. She will also become the first female student to secure medals in guitar at the university. She was the only woman in the class. "Neha Qazi has created history as she is the first student in the university to receive gold medals in guitar as no student had previously been awarded a medal in this discipline. She was also the only female student in her entire batch studying guitar," the vice-chancellor said.
Coming from a joint family with no musical background and facing religious and family restrictions, Neha was not allowed to practise at home. "I rehearsed at my teacher's residence, friends' homes, and on campus," she said.
Shweta said her father wanted her to choose a stable career. "Inspired by watching Kathak maestro Pandit Birju Maharaj on television, I developed a passion for the dance form," she added.
