Braj region marks Environment Day with plantation drives
Agra, June 6 -- World Environment Day was observed across Braj region on Friday with plantation drives, awareness campaigns and pledges to protect the environment. A mass awareness campaign was also launched and will continue till June 21, the International Day of Yoga.
At Aligarh Muslim University, plantation drives, landscaping initiatives and awareness programmes were organised jointly by the Department of Land and Gardens, the University Games Committee and A.B.K. High School (Girls). The main programme at the Yusuff Ali Aquatics and Sports Complex was inaugurated by Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mohd. Mohsin Khan, who called for collective efforts to preserve ecological balance and natural resources for future generations.
In Agra, Police Commissioner Deepak Kumar planted a sapling under the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign at his camp office.
Around 200 police personnel later took part in a walkathon to spread the message of environmental conservation.
Officials of the Social Forestry Department said that while five crore saplings were planted across Uttar Pradesh on the day, Agra contributed nearly 7.94 lakh saplings, with the main district event held at Taj Nature Walk.
In Mathura, a plantation programme was organised at the Veterinary University in the presence of Vice-Chancellor Dr Abhijit Mitra, District Magistrate C.P. Singh and DFO V.S. Patel.
