Dehradun, Aug. 12 -- The Uttarakhand BJP on Tuesday accused Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of "adopting double standards" over protests related to the paper leak issue. During a press conference at the state BJP headquarters in Dalanwala, cabinet minister Subodh Uniyal said, "On the one hand, Rahul Gandhi is trying to portray himself as a well-wisher of students, while on the other hand, we have seen what happened in Jharkhand. Barbed wires were put up against protesting students, and they were treated with cruelty. Unlike the protests in Delhi, there was no abusive language or obscene behaviour there. But where the Congress is in government with the JMM, his voice is silent. This shows the double standards of the Congress and Rahul Gandhi," he said. Uniyal also accused Gandhi of disrupting parliamentary proceedings and misleading people by making false claims. "First, he demanded the resignation of the education minister, and this was used to disrupt Parliament. When the minister resigned, he demanded a discussion on NEET. But when the time came for a discussion, Rahul Gandhi ran away from the debate," he said. Uniyal further accused Gandhi and opposition parties of supporting protesters who allegedly used abusive language against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "The way students were instigated in Delhi and abusive language was used against the Prime Minister, the opposition stood with them. This is a dark chapter in Indian parliamentary history. The Leader of the Opposition is peddling lies for sensation," he said. "By creating an atmosphere of anarchy, they want to regain the political ground they have lost. This is a democratic country and we believe in democratic values and ethos. The Congress is rattled," Uniyal added. Uttarakhand Congress chief spokesperson Garima Mehra Dasauni hit back at Uniyal over his remarks against Gandhi, saying he should first focus on the state's healthcare system and his own department. "Rahul Gandhi is the LoP and raising issues concerning the country's youth and democratic rights is his constitutional and political responsibility. Instead of worrying about Gandhi, Uniyal should be concerned about his own department and the state," she said. Dasauni said the Jharkhand government has held several rounds of talks with students, agreed to demands including cancellation of three JPSC examinations, witnessed resignations at the top level of the commission and initiated action over alleged irregularities. "If Uniyal is genuinely concerned about students, he should explain who will be held accountable for recruitment irregularities and paper leaks in Uttarakhand that affected thousands of youths," she said....
