BJP MLA urges Union min for robust phone safety mechanism
Lucknow, June 12 -- Rajeshwar Singh, Bharatiya Janata Party MLA from Lucknow's Sarojininagar assembly seat, has written a letter to Union minister for electronics & information technology Ashwini Vaishnaw, requesting consideration of a stronger national mechanism to ensure that stolen mobile phones become unusable across the country.
In his letter, Singh appreciated the government's efforts and initiatives such as Sanchar Saathi and CEIR, which have empowered citizens to block, trace and recover lost or stolen mobile phones.
Highlighting the growing challenge of mobile phone theft, Singh noted that such incidents affect citizens' privacy, banking access, UPI accounts, personal data and digital identity.
Referring to official data, he observed that more than 50 lakh mobile handsets have been blocked through CEIR, with over 31 lakh traced and more than 10 lakh recovered.
To further strengthen the system, Singh suggested integration of CEIR, National Crime Records Bureau and State Police FIR databases so that every reported stolen mobile phone is immediately flagged at the national level.
He also recommended creation of a dedicated national database of stolen mobile phones. The letter further proposes secure sharing of verified stolen-device data with trusted manufacturers and technology companies to prevent activation, resale, servicing and reuse of stolen devices.
