BJP legislator claims reporter held for taking his interview
Rudrapur, May 24 -- A local journalist was detained in Dehradun's Raipur on Saturday in connection with his alleged links to a repeat offender involved in multiple cases of fraud, police said.
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) MLA in Gadarpur, Arvind Pandey, alleged that the police action was linked to an interview he gave the journalist, identified as Hem Bhatt, a day earlier.
Bhatt was released in the evening, said police.
"Police harassed Bhatt because he took my interview on Friday and I spoke clearly about the government and how I am being treated in the state. I have been declared a land mafia. After my interview, the police raided his house early in the morning on Saturday and also assaulted him in front of his wife and daughter," said Pandey.
"Some police personnel are maligning the image of the police department by misusing their powers," he added.
"Action should be taken against me if I am found a land mafia or have usurped others' land. On the other hand a narco test should also be conducted on them who are alleging or portraying me as a mafia. After a few months later, assembly elections are to be held, if I am found guilty, I must be sent to jail," he added. Dehradun superintendent of police (city), Pramod Kumar, denied Pandey's allegations. "Raipur police had arrested a Pradeep Saklani. He was involved in 26 cases of fraud and had a bounty of Rs.20,000 out for his capture. When we were questioning him, he mentioned some names of people he claimed had links with him. Bhatt was mentioned, and as he had mentioned him before, we brought him to the station to question him on why his name was mentioned. It has nothing to do with the interview," he said."...
