Bike ban ignored; rider killed in expressway crash
Lucknow, July 16 -- A 25-year-old man was killed and his friend critically injured after an unidentified speeding vehicle hit their motorcycle on the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway in Lucknow's Banthra area on Wednesday evening, just a day after the newly inaugurated expressway was opened to traffic.
Police said the victims were travelling on the expressway despite a prohibition on two-wheelers. The deceased was identified as Himanshu Singh (25), a resident of Arjunamau village under Sohramau police station in Unnao district. His companion, Shailendra Singh (24), a resident of Sandila in Hardoi district, sustained serious injuries.
According to police, the two were returning home from Lucknow on a motorcycle at around 6 pm when an unidentified vehicle rammed into them near the 20.5-km mark of the expressway in Banthra. After receiving information, Banthra police and an NHAI team reached the spot and shifted both injured men to the Sarojini Nagar Community Health Centre.
Doctors declared Himanshu dead on arrival, while Shailendra was referred to the KGMU Trauma Centre, where he is undergoing treatment. Police said the body has been sent for post-mortem examination and a case has been initiated against the unidentified driver.
Efforts are underway to identify the offending vehicle. Entry of motorcycles and other slow-moving vehicles is prohibited on access-controlled expressway....
