KANPUR, July 22 -- A 23-year-old B Tech gold medallist allegedly died by suicide at his home in Gujaini area here on Saturday-Sunday intervening night, leaving behind a handwritten note apologising to his father for being unable to secure a government job despite nearly 50 attempts across multiple recruitment exams. Preliminary investigation suggested that the stress of not securing a government job was the primary factor. However all aspects of the case were being examined though no formal complaint was received, said SHO (Govind Nagar) Ashok Kumar Dubey. The student had topped the electrical engineering programme at a private college and secured third rank in UP in 2024. His body was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his room on the third floor of the family's three-storey house in Govind Nagar neighbourhood. His family had travelled to Bihar to finalise his elder brother's marriage and the domestic help raised an alarm after repeated knocks on the door went unanswered. Neighbours were alerted and police were called in. Officers broke open the door and recovered the body, along with a five-line handwritten note. "Sorry, papa, I tried nearly 50 times to get a government job, but I couldn't succeed. Please forgive me," the purported note read, according to police. The body was sent for a post-mortem examination and the last rites were performed at Bhairav Ghat on Sunday evening. The deceased's father, a retired employee of a private firm and a native of Buxar in Bihar, said his son had completed a one-year apprenticeship with Power Grid after graduation before turning his full attention to competitive examinations. "He appeared for recruitment examinations conducted by the Railways, the Staff Selection Commission, banks and the education department, but could not succeed. He had been under severe stress for the past several months," the father said....
