LUCKNOW, June 7 -- The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has stepped up investigation into an alleged Pakistan-backed terror module by taking arrested suspect Mohammad Sheikh to Azamgarh for evidence collection and on-ground verification of his suspected links with Pakistan's ISI and gangster Shahzad Bhatti's network. A seven-member ATS team brought Sheikh to his native Khudadadpur village after securing a five-day police custody remand. Investigators searched his residence and building-materials shop, questioned family members and local residents, and seized a mobile phone allegedly belonging to the accused. The ATS also visited several locations in Nizamabad, Saraimir and nearby areas to reconstruct Sheikh's movements and identify possible associates. Recoveries and verification exercises were documented through videography. Sheikh was arrested on June 1 after the ATS alleged that he was working for a terror network linked to Pakistan-based gangster Shahzad Bhatti and ISI-backed operatives. According to the agency, he was radicalised through social media and was in contact with network handlers using Pakistan and Dubai-based mobile numbers. The ATS claims the network was recruiting and radicalising Indian youths to function as sleeper cells and carry out terror-related activities.
