AGRA, Oct. 5 -- A student's hunger strike since September 21 demanding restoration of students' union election at the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU)-last held in 2018-is now getting political support. Azad Samaj Party chief and Nagina MP Chandrashekhar Azad extended his support to the demand on Sunday. "It is extremely concerning that students raising their voices for their democratic demands are facing FIRs and suspension actions. The AMU administration should immediately adopt the path of dialogue and adequate medical facility be provided to fasting students," Azad wrote on X. RJD's Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Jha has also extended support to the demand and promised to raise the issue at the appropriate level. "The university authorities had given in writing after a meeting held between university functionaries and student representatives on August 19, 2025 to hold AMUSU elections in December 2025," claimed Amzad Ali, a law student at AMU supporting the demand. "The unfulfilled promise is forcing students to raise the demand repeatedly, and one student, Yaseer Fahad, has been on the hunger strike since September 21, but there is no step forward by university officials," he further claimed. Former office-bearers of AMUSU, including ex secretary Huzefa Amir Rashidi, have also extended their support to the demand. Meanwhile, AMU proctor Prof Mohammad Naved Khan said the university administration is open to holding a dialogue on the issue provided a well represented delegation of students comes and meets the vice chancellor. "The VC is aware of the matter, and I have met the students agitating over the issue more than 6 times. The dean, student welfare, is keeping an eye on the situation, and students are asked to send a delegation to the vice chancellor," Prof Khan added.
