Angry villagers stage road blockade with body, demand 'bulldozer action' against accused
PRAYAGRAJ, May 13 -- : Tension gripped Soraon area in the trans-Ganga region of Prayagraj following the recent murder of an ITI student, as angry family members and villagers staged a road blockade by placing the victim's body on the road after postmortem examination on Tuesday.
Protesters also allegedly pelted stones at the accused's house and demanded bulldozer action against his family.
The deceased, identified as 19-year-old Himanshu Saroj, a resident of Rajapur Chaubara village, was living at his maternal grandparents' house in Purabanara while pursuing ITI studies. According to police, Himanshu was shot dead on May 10 by Sahil Yadav over an old rivalry. After the postmortem examination, the body was brought home on Monday evening, but the family refused to perform the last rites until the accused was arrested. Police later claimed to have arrested Sahil Yadav Monday night following an encounter.
Despite the arrest, family members, villagers and supporters of the Bhim Army continued their protest on Tuesday, demanding demolition of the accused's house, government land allotment for the victim's family and financial compensation. During the agitation, protesters blocked the road with the body and allegedly pushed and jostled Station House Officer of Holagarh police station Virendra Kumar Mishra.
The situation further escalated when angry locals reportedly attacked the accused's residence with stones. Following the unrest, heavy police deployment was made in the area and senior administrative officials rushed to the spot.
DCP (trans-Ganga) Kuldeep Singh Gunawat, ACP (Soraon) Shyamjeet Singh and SDM (Soraon) Gyanendra Nath held talks with the protesters and assured them that their demands would be considered, after which the agitation was called off. "Police personnel have been posted in the village to ensure peace," said DCP (trans-Ganga) Kuldeep Singh Gunawat. Later in the evening, the body was taken back to the residence of the victim's maternal grandfather, Radheshyam Saroj, before the last rites were performed at Shringverpur Ghat on the banks of the Ganga around 4pm.Several political leaders and local representatives, including BJP MLA Guru Prasad Maurya, BJP district president Nirmala Paswan, SP leader Doodhnath Patel and BSP leader Ramraj Saroj, were present during the funeral procession....
