AMU revokes suspension of student leader after 19-day hunger strike
Agra, Oct. 22 -- Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has revoked the suspension of student leader Yasir Fahad, who went on a 19-day hunger strike demanding elections to the AMU Students' Union. The university accepted his demand, and polling for the union elections will take place on November 5 after a gap of eight years.
Prof Nafees Ahmad Ansari, who recently took over as the university's proctor, confirmed the revocation of Fahad's suspension on Wednesday.
"The order dated September 20, 2026, related to the suspension of Yasir Fahad was revoked by vice-chancellor Prof Naima Khatoon on the recommendation of the discipline committee. The committee meeting was held on October 10 in the chamber of the pro-vice-chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University," the proctor said.
Fahad was suspended following a protest march on the AMU campus on September 14. The march started at Dock Point and proceeded towards the Bab-e-Syed gate, where Fahad and around 10 others allegedly blocked the main gate. He was accused of raising defamatory slogans against university functionaries.
After receiving a notice, Fahad appeared before the university's discipline committee and denied most of the charges against him. He was subsequently cleared of the charges, and the suspension order was revoked.
Fahad had begun his hunger strike to demand elections to the AMU Students' Union. The strike ended on October 9 after vice-chancellor prof Naima Khatoon offered him juice at the protest site and accepted several demands. These included the removal of the then proctor, prof Mohd Naved Ali Khan. Prof Nafees Ahmad Ansari subsequently took charge as the new proctor.
