AIPEF opposes power sector privatisation
Lucknow, Aug. 17 -- The All India Power Engineers Federation (AIPEF), on its 54th Foundation Day on Sunday, called upon power engineers across the country to oppose moves aimed at privatising the electricity sector, saying reforms should strengthen public utilities and protect consumer interests.
AIPEF chairman Shailendra Dubey and secretary general P Ratnakar Rao opposed the Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2025, privatisation of public-sector DISCOMs, multiple distribution licences, transmission projects through tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB), monetisation of power assets and private control of generation, particularly renewable energy. They said electricity infrastructure had been built through public investment and consumer contributions and should not be handed over to private operators. Selective entry of private players, they argued, could leave public DISCOMs with loss-making agricultural, rural and subsidised consumers while private firms served profitable consumers.
The federation also opposed large-scale privatisation of transmission and urged strengthening state and central utilities with adequate manpower, technology and financial resources....
