Agra, Aug. 4 -- A 22-year-old woman was allegedly strangled to death by her father in a suspected case of hate crime in Agra district, police said. The incident took place in Pratap Nagar locality of Jaitpur town in Agra district on Sunday night. The father was arrested on Monday and a case was registered against him. It is alleged that the woman married an ITBP jawan in court earlier this year against the wishes of her family. The woman was a graduate and lived with her family. According to Abhishek Kumar Agarwal, the deputy commissioner of police (east) at Agra police commissionerate, information was received at Jaitpur police station of Agra district on Monday morning at 5am that a man had killed his daughter. "On reaching Pratap Nagar locality of Jaitpur town, police found that the accused identified as Vimal Sharma had killed his 22-year- old daughter. The accused father was taken into custody and a case was registered against him at Jaitpur police station for murder of his daughter," stated DCP (East) Agra. "During interrogation, the accused said that he was angry with his daughter for marrying a man of her choice in court a few months ago," stated Agarwal. "The body has been sent for postmortem examination and other legal compliances are being undertaken. Matter is being investigated," said the DCP East. It is alleged, both the man and the deceased woman were of the same caste, although they were from different villages of Bah tehsil in Agra district. Assistant commissioner of police (ACP) for Bah circle Jitendra Kumar said the woman was strangled to death on Sunday night. While other family members moved out, father stayed back taking the blame, he said. "Various dimensions of the case are to be worked out, including the role of other family members in this ghastly crime," said Jitendra Kumar. Meanwhile, the police at Jaitpur police station is working out on the details of the court marriage that took place in the month of February this year, as alleged by the accused father. The father had no documents of court marriage, revealed police. Police are also tracing the man from the nearby village who is said to have married the deceased woman.
