Agra, April 20 -- Footwear traders and workers in Agra have opposed the proposed trade licence fee imposed by Agra Nagar Nigam and warned of a road blockade on Mahatma Gandhi Road if the charges are not withdrawn by May 1. The decision was taken at a joint meeting of footwear organisations held at the office of Agra Shoe Factors Federation. The protest has been planned for May 1, observed as Labour Day. Traders and workers said they would gather in large numbers and block traffic on MG Road. Federation chairman Vijay Sama said the footwear sector is a labour-intensive small-scale industry and any such fee would affect around 3.5 lakh families linked to the trade in Agra. He said imposing fees on units employing fewer than 25 workers was arbitrary. Pradeep Pippal of Bhim Yuva Vyapar Mandal urged the Nagar Nigam to understand the problems faced by traders, who are already dealing with a sharp rise in raw material prices....
