Advik causes first major upset in AITA C'ship Series
LUCKNOW, March 31 -- Young Advik Jain on Monday caused the first major upset of the Under-14 AITA Championship Series, outplaying second seeded Mohd Sufiyan in straight sets, at the KD Singh 'Babu' Stadium here.
Playing true to his free-flow nature, Jain kept his rival on his toes with fine cross-court volleys and drops at the nets while scripting 6-2, 6-0 win in the first round match of the boys singles category on the synthetic court.
Third seeded Yuvraaj Singh played true to his reputation and outplayed Prakhar Kuswaha 6-0, 6-1 also in a first round match, whereas fourth seeded Tejas Singh brushed aside Vivan Singh of Maharashtra 6-3, 6-2 also in straight sets. Top seeded Pavith Singh too went on making it to the second round with a resounding win over Krishang Sharma 6-1, 6-1.
In other first round matches, Hamdaan beat Avi Saxena 6-3, 6-2, Arnav Srivastava beat Ekagra Singh 6-3, 6-4, Vaidik Shukla beat Avighna K Verma 6-4, 2-1 (cond), Kabir Sharma beat Atharva Srivastava 6-2, 6-1, Ansh Narayan Agarwal beat Manas Patel 7-5, 6-2, Parth Joshi came from behind to beat Aarnav Garg 0-6, 6-4, 6-3, Aarav Patel beat Adamya Singh Bhadoriya 6-0, 7-5, Riddhiman Rajput too came from behind to beat Harshat Patel 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 and Arnav Srivastava Asvik Srivastava 6-1, 6-2.
On a day when upsets galore in the AITA Prize Money Tennis Tournament here on Monday, fifth seeded Anshuman Singh, Eklavya Singh, qualifiers Vansh Yadav and Rishi Yadav secured spots in the singles pre-quarterfinals with victories.
Eklavya Singh caused an upset by defeating the sixth seed from Haryana, Arnatya Ohlyan 6-4, 6-4. Haryana's qualifier Sunil Kumar pulled off a second upset by defeating seventh seeded Rajeshwar Reddy, 6-0, 6-3. West Bengal's Aditya Kumar was leading 6-3, 3-0 when the third seed from Maharashtra, Anoop Mahadev, retired from the match.
The fifth seed from Uttar Pradesh, Anshuman Singh, registered a 6-3, 6-4 victory against Haryana's Dhruv Ghanghas. Qualifiers Vansh Yadav and Rishi Yadav also advanced to the next round with wins defeating Haryana's Saurav Kumar Yadav 6-2, 7-5, and fellow UP player Joy Das 6-1, 6-2, respectively.
On the other hand, top seed Atharva Sharma of Maharashtra defeated Daksh Gupta of Delhi 6-0, 6-0. Second seeded Sarthak Sudan of Delhi defeated Akhil of Haryana 6-0, 6-0. Fourth seeded Mukil Ramanan of Tamil Nadu defeated Pulkit Hitesh Patwari of Gujarat 6-1, 6-2. Eighth seeded Parth R Patil of Maharashtra advanced to the next round by defeating Chinmay Dev Chauhan of Uttar Pradesh 7-5, 3-6, 6-2....
