Abhyuday sets up title clash with Faiz
LUCKNOW, April 17 -- Young Abhyuday Singh overcame Meher Singh Khosla 6-0, 6-7, 6-3 in a gritty encounter to make it to the final of boys under-18 singles at the AITA Championship series in Prayagraj on Thursday.
Now, he will take on Faiz Ali Kidwai, who staged a remarkable comeback, defeating Kinjalk Srivastava 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 to set up an all-UP final. The doubles semi-finals stayed firmly in Uttar Pradesh hands.
Rishant Jaiswal and Kinjalk Srivastava dispatched Anuruddh Kumar and Meher Khosla 6-4, 6-3. In a nail-biter, Rohin Raj and Abhyuday Singh edged out Vanshraj Jalota and Faiz Ali Kidwai 6-2, 2-6, 10-7, ensuring an all-UP showdown. The girls under-18 singles semi-finals saw Madhya Pradesh's Manusmriti Singh rally past Uttar Pradesh's Niti Dubey 2-6, 6-1, 7-6. Poorva Singh also prevailed in a marathon against Airah 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, guaranteeing an MP final. In doubles, Poorva Singh and Manusmriti Singh (Madhya Pradesh) overpowered Siddhi Singh and Airah (Uttar Pradesh) 6-2, 6-4. Niti Dubey and Tashi Kiran (Uttar Pradesh) dominated Swastika and Siona Chikkar 6-2, 6-4.
UP junior on Thursday hogged limelight in the semi-finals of the AITA Talent Series Under-12, at the Vijayant Khand Stadium here in Lucknow.
In the boys singles semi-finals, 5th seed Hamdaan staged a comeback against 7th seed Arnav Srivastava, dropping the first set 5-7 but roaring back 6-1, 6-4. Fourth seed Asvik Srivastava outlasted Advik Jain in a three-set thriller 6-4, 5-7, 6-1. These victories set up an all-UP final clash.
The girls singles semi-finals were equally fierce. Siya Singh overcame Anya 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, while Aarika Raj Singh pulled off a major upset over third seed Navya Rawal, blanking her 6-0, 6-2. The boys doubles final brought more drama, with Hamdaan and Arnav Srivastava upsetting second seeds Rudra Chaurasiya and Shivansh 7-5, 6-2. The pair's synergy turned the match into a showcase of tactical brilliance.
In the girls doubles semi-finals, Anya and Hiya Chauhan edged Siya Singh and Sanvi Jaiswal 6-1, 1-6, 10-4 in a super tiebreak decider, advancing with composure under pressure.
The stage is set for boxing bouts featuring talented youth and emerging athletes in the city. Starting Friday, the inaugural boxing championship by the VK Sahu Foundation will witness thrilling contests held at the boxing arena within the KD Singh 'Babu' Stadium. Approximately 300 boxers from the city, competing across five age categories, will showcase their prowess and vie for medals.
Sahadev Singh, secretary of the District Boxing Association, announced that the three-day competition will see participation of 130 girls and 170 boys from 25 city schools, along with various clubs and academies. The competition will feature bouts across the mini, sub-junior, junior, senior, and youth categories....
