Agra, May 30 -- Nine people were arrested after a dispute between two groups over holding a bhandara escalated into shots being fired in Maholi village of Mathura on Thursday. Police made the arrests on Friday. As police officials took a serious view of the violence, the incharge of the Highway police station was removed and sent to the police lines, while the police outpost in-charge and beat constable were suspended. The nine people arrested on Friday were identified as Rajveer Singh (55), Mahesh (23), Manoj (30), Pawan (32), Kedar (48), Lillo (55), Mohan (24), Mahesh and Raju were arrested from both groups. Two groups came face to face on Thursday on the issue of the location of the bhandara for devotees lodging a Parikrama, which passes through village Maholi in Mathura district. Besides stone-pelting, shots were fired between supporters of Rajveer, the representative of local corporator on one side and supporters of Kedar, a local strongman, on other side. It is said the dispute was triggered by the motorcycle of one group member touching another. SSP Mathura Shlok Kumar said that the two groups are old rivals. "Shots were fired between these two groups in village Maholi on Thursday. Six people were injured in the clash and six were taken into custody for interrogation. Those indulging in firing were visible in CCTV footage attained by the police. Cartridges, sticks and illegal arms were recovered by police during a search operation after the clash. "A case has been registered at the Highway police station of Mathura in this regard. It is being evaluated how much information the local police had and what action they had taken to avoid the clash and responsibilities will be fixed," the SSP said on Thursday after the clash. Police officials became active late on Thursday night and Shailendra Kumar, the in-charge of Highway police station was removed by SSP Mathura and was sent to police lines. Inspector Prashant Kapil was named new in-charge of Highway police station in Mathura within limits of which is village Maholi. Besides, the incharge of Industrial Area/Panna Pokhar police outpost, sub inspector Sandeep Kumar and beat constable Adarsh Kumar were prima facie found negligent in their duties and were suspended by SSP Mathura on late on Thursday night. In a press statement issued by media cell of Mathura police on Friday, it was informed that crime case no. 525 of 2026 under section 191(2)/ 191(3) /190/109(1) /352/351(3)/131 of Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita for rioting, attempt to murder, provocation for breach of peace, criminal intimidation, criminal force beside 7 Criminal Law Amendment Act was registered at Highway police station of Mathura....
