8 people held for brandishing weapons at I-Day procession
Rudrapur, Aug. 19 -- Eight people have been arrested so far in Rudrapur for allegedly brandishing weapons at an Independence Day procession in the city, police said, adding that five illegal sharp-edged weapons were also seized.
The eight arrested so far were identified as Karan Sahni, Govinda Gupta, Rajiv, Harsh alias Bhola, Abhishek alias Kalu, Mohammad Hasan Nawab Ali, Saksham Rajpur and Abhay Vishwakarma, police said.
Udham Singh Nagar SSP Ajay Ganpati ordered the action, said police, adding that some people who were part of the procession in question were seen allegedly displaying swords, khukris, country-made pistols and other weapons.
The incident also allegedly disrupted traffic and disturbed public order.
Police registered an FIR at Rudrapur Kotwali under sections 189(2), 189(4), 190, 191(3), 126 and 351 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against named accused and around 30 unidentified people. Police have also initiated action against three people under Section 172 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
On August 16, Transit Camp police arrested three accused from the Modi Maidan area following a tip-off and recovered a folding fish-shaped knife. Rudrapur Kotwali police subsequently arrested Karan Sahni and Govinda Gupta from the Block Road area late on August 17.
Police have also seized five two-wheelers after their owners failed to produce the required documents. One DJ vehicle linked to the August 15 incident has also been seized.
Police are analysing video footage of the procession to identify other participants and ascertain their individual roles...
