Dehradun, Aug. 31 -- Heavy to very heavy rain lashed several parts of Uttarakhand over the past 24 hours, triggering landslides, boulder falls and waterlogging, disrupting road connectivity and causing rivers to swell in various parts of the state. 77 roads were blocked in different districts on Sunday, while the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for August 31 and September 1. Of the 77 blocked roads, 15 were in Pithoragarh, 15 in Tehri Garhwal, 13 in Chamoli, 11 in Bageshwar, seven in Dehradun, five in Nainital, three each in Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag and Almora, and two in Pauri Garhwal. Authorities launched clearance operations at several locations and deployed machinery to restore connectivity. The intense weather also led to a rise in water levels in several rivers, with some crossing their warning marks and approaching danger levels. The administration remained on high alert, particularly in areas vulnerable to flash floods, landslides and riverbank erosion. In Chamoli district, normal life was disrupted in Karnaprayag on Sunday morning after around two-and-a-half hours of torrential rainfall triggered landslides and sent large quantities of mud, boulders and uprooted trees into residential areas. A heavy debris flow swept into the Subhash Nagar area, putting houses and commercial establishments at risk. A local shopkeeper had a narrow escape after being caught close to the path of the sliding debris early in the morning. The sudden flow of sludge buried several two-wheelers parked along the roadside and damaged overhead electricity transmission lines. The debris also blocked the main road, disrupting traffic towards the Kumaon and Pindar valley regions. NK Joshi, district disaster management officer, Chamoli, said the road was cleared after more than two hours of work. "The debris was cleared and the road was reopened for traffic in the Upper Bazaar and Subhash Nagar areas of Karnaprayag after an effort of more than two hours," he said. In Dehradun, incessant rain over the past 24 hours led to waterlogging in some areas. The road connecting Maldevta with Sondna village, which also provides access to the under-construction Song Dam site, was washed away near Kund village. Rishabh Kumar, district disaster management officer, Dehradun, said: "Teams have been rushed to the affected areas and relief efforts have been launched to restore normalcy"....
