Lucknow/Meerut, Aug. 11 -- Seven devotees were killed in separate road accidents involving pilgrims and Kanwariyas in Uttar Pradesh on Monday, police said. Two deaths each were reported from Barabanki, Saharanpur and Kasganj and there was one fatality in Kaushambi. In Barabanki, two youths were killed and another critically injured when their motorcycle collided with a tractor-trolley near Dadanpur village on the Fatehpur-Suratganj road. The deceased were identified as Shailendra alias Hemal Joshi, 22, and Shaktiman Joshi, 19. Their companion, Sachin Joshi, 21, was injured. Police said the three, residents of Joshi Tola in Barabanki's Fatehpur, were reportedly travelling to a Shiv temple to offer prayers during Shrawan when the accident occurred. All three were seriously injured in the collision. Local residents took them to a community health centre (CHC), where doctors declared Shailendra dead on arrival. Shaktiman was referred to the district hospital as his condition was critical. His transfer was, however, delayed as an ambulance reportedly failed to reach the CHC despite repeated calls from his family and hospital staff. Relatives said they waited for around one-and-a-half hours for the ambulance. The delay led to protests at the hospital. As the situation grew tense, police arranged to take Shaktiman to the district hospital in a police vehicle, but he died on the way. In Saharanpur, a 34-year-old Kanwar pilgrim from Baghpat was killed and his companion seriously injured after their motorcycle crashed into a divider on the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway in Badgaon area early Monday, while the two were reportedly travelling towards Haridwar to collect Ganga water. The deceased was identified as Mohit Pal, a resident of Chaprauli in Baghpat district. Deoband circle officer Amit Singh said two motorcycle-borne men from Baghpat had crashed into a divider on the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway in the Badgaon area. In another accident in Saharanpur, a kanwariya returning to Delhi with Ganga water from Haridwar was killed in a road accident on the Delhi-Yamunotri Highway on Monday morning, after a container allegedly rammed into him from behind amid heavy rain. The deceased was identified as Himanshu alias Honey Dagar (22), a resident of Rajiv Nagar in Delhi. In Kaushambi, a pilgrim was killed and 30 others, including the driver, were injured after a pickup vehicle carrying 36 devotees overturned on National Highway-19. The accident occurred near Kasia village when the pilgrims from Nizampur Puraini were travelling to Maa Sheetla Dham in Kada for a holy dip and darshan, police said. Superintendent of police Satyanarayan Prajapat said the driver was attempting to overtake a bus when he lost control of the overloaded vehicle that was travelling at high speed and it overturned. Ram Sharan (18), a resident of Nizampur Puraini, died on the spot. In Kasganj, two Kanwariyas were killed and another was seriously injured when their motorcycle collided with a car near the Kali River bridge, superintendent of police O P Singh said.
