52 booked in Nainital prostitution racket bust; 10 women rescued
Haldwani, July 6 -- Police carried out a late-night raid on a resort in Ramnagar, Nainital district, rescuing 10 women and booking 52 people in connection with a prostitution racket, officers said on Sunday.
Senior superintendent of police Manjunath TC said officers had received specific intelligence that a prostitution racket was operating from a resort in the Ramnagar area. "Acting on the information, a joint team of Ramnagar police and the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) was constituted under the supervision of superintendent of police (city) Manoj Katyal to verify the inputs and take appropriate action," the SSP said.
Police said the joint team, after conducting surveillance, raided Jungle Resort at around 2 am on Sunday.
During the search, officers recovered liquor bottles, cash and other objectionable material from the premises. They also found a bar being run without the requisite permission, the SSP said.
"Ten women from Nepal, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal were rescued from the resort during the operation. They were provided mandatory counselling and have been shifted to the One Stop Centre in Haldwani for assistance, protection and further rehabilitation as per the prescribed protocol," he said.
A case has been registered against all 52 accused under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and other applicable laws, and an investigation has been opened to determine the extent of the alleged trafficking and the involvement of others, police said.
The operator of the resort fled during the raid, while other staff present were detained.
"The resort operator has been named in the FIR, and police teams have been formed to arrest him at the earliest," the SSP added.
Police said inquiries are continuing to establish whether the alleged racket had links with any interstate human trafficking network....
