50,000-strong crowd all set to test Ekana security measures
LUCKNOW, April 1 -- The Ekana Cricket Stadium in the state capital will function as a mini-metropolis on Wednesday, complete with its own security zones, command hierarchy and emergency protocols to manage 50,000 fans. Lucknow Police have applied the same grid-based crowd control system they deploy across cities to the confines of a single venue.
"The entire stadium has been divided into three super zones headed by an SP-rank officer. These super zones will further have six zones and 16 sectors," said Babloo Kumar, JCP (law and order), on Tuesday. Instead of treating the crowd as a single mass, police have broken it into smaller, clearly defined pockets under direct supervision. Each unit can respond to emergencies, regulate movement and prevent overcrowding with minimal response time.
The approach requires substantial manpower. "The security arrangement includes three DCPs, six additional DCPs and 16 DCPs, along with over 700 personnel from subordinate ranks. Around 130 women police personnel have also been deployed at key points," Kumar said.
Additional support comes from PAC, RAF, ATS units, intelligence teams, bomb detection and disposal squads and anti-mine units. Traffic management extends beyond the stadium, with surrounding areas divided into two super zones, three zones, nine sectors and 24 sub-sectors to regulate vehicle flow.
"Separate routes for VVIPs, players, and spectators, along with designated entry and exit gates, aim to minimise overlap and congestion," Kumar added. Police have conducted joint briefings and mock drills to ensure coordination, while CCTV cameras and drones will provide real-time surveillance during the match....
