5 from UP for Youth Hockey5s Asian Championship in Muscat
LUCKNOW, July 15 -- Uttar Pradesh's hockey fraternity has another reason to celebrate as five talented youngsters from the state earn selection in the Indian sub-junior men's squad for the Men's Youth Hockey5s Asian Championship in Muscat, scheduled from July 20 to 25.
The announcement carries extra pride with Lucknow Hostel's Ketan Kushwaha not only included in the 12-member side but entrusted with the captain's armband - a clear recognition of his leadership, skill and maturity on the field.
Ketan's elevation to captain marks a milestone for Uttar Pradesh Hockey. A product of the state's developing grassroots pathway, Ketan has impressed national selectors with his tactical awareness, work-rate and composure in pressure moments.
Joining him are four other Uttar Pradesh standouts: Prahlad Rajbhar, Shahrukh Ali, Rahul Yadav and Romit Pal. Each has forced their way into contention through consistent performances at state and national age-group events, demonstrating the discipline and resilience that modern hockey demands.
Their selection underlines the progress of Uttar Pradesh's talent ecosystem. Coaches, academies and district programmes have steadily improved scouting, fitness regimes and technical coaching, helping prospects convert potential into national call-ups. The success story is not only individual but institutional - reflecting stronger ties between state associations, schools and the sports department.
The coaching and management appointments add further weight to the state's influence on the national setup. Rajnish Mishra, an international veteran and general secretary of Uttar Pradesh Hockey, has been named coach of the Indian team.
His experience at the highest levels of the game and familiarity with the youth circuit provide a valuable bridge between strategy and player development.
In the selection room, RP Singh, director of the Sports Department, Uttar Pradesh, and president of Uttar Pradesh Hockey-serves as chief selector, ensuring the state's administrative leadership also contributes directly to nurturing national talent.
Competition in Muscat will offer these youngsters exposure to the fast-paced, high-intensity format of Hockey5s - a version that emphasises speed, technical flair and quick decision-making.
For players like Ketan and his Uttar Pradesh teammates, the tournament is an opportunity to test their skills against Asia's best, gain international experience and announce themselves as prospects for higher age groups and, eventually, senior ranks.
Beyond medals and match results, the broader significance of five players from one state making the sub-junior squad cannot be overstated. It sends a message to aspiring athletes across Uttar Pradesh that pathways to national representation exist and that dedication, structure and mentorship can translate into international opportunities.
Local academies and district associations will hope this success inspires increased participation and investment, particularly in talent-rich regions that have historically been under-served. As the team prepares for Muscat, attention will centre on Ketan's captaincy and how the Uttar Pradesh quintet integrates with teammates from other states.
Their progress will be followed closely back home by coaches, family and a growing band of supporters keen to see Uttar Pradesh contribute to India's hockey resurgence. If the early signs are anything to go by, this crop of youngsters has the potential to shape the next generation of Indian hockey stories - starting in Muscat and beyond....
