BAHRAICH, July 12 -- A 48-year-old villager was killed in a suspected tiger attack inside the Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary (KWS) in Bahraich on Friday night, sparking panic among residents of nearby forest-fringe villages. While locals alleged that the victim was attacked by a tiger, forest department officials said the nature of the injuries indicates that a leopard was more likely responsible. The deceased was identified as Dashrath Yadav (48), resident of Maikupurwa hamlet in Dharmpur Bejha village under the Murtiha police station limits. According to sources, Yadav had entered the forest in the Kakarha Range around 2 p.m. on Friday to graze his cattle. When he failed to return home by 8 p.m., his family informed the forest department and local police. Forest personnel, along with local villagers, launched a search operation inside the forest. At around 10 pm, the team found Yadav's mutilated body deep inside the Kakarha Range. Speaking to HT, divisional forest officer (DFO) of Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary, Apoorv Dixit said the nature of the injuries and the condition of the body suggest the victim was more likely attacked by a leopard than a tiger. He said this would be confirmed only after the post-mortem examination, adding the forest department has provided immediate financial assistance of Rs.10,000 to the victim's family....
