46 relief camps, 21 flood outposts open
VARANASI, Aug. 22 -- The Varanasi administration activated flood relief camps and flood outposts to deal with the flood-like situation. Administrative, relief and rescue mechanisms in vulnerable and flood-prone areas have been placed on high alert. Mock drills involving the NDRF, SDRF, Water Police and PAC have been conducted and 'Aapda Mitras' (disaster volunteers) have been asked to stay fully alert to ensure there is no delay in relief and rescue operations.
Additional district magistrate (finance and revenue) Dr Sadanand Gupta stated that all concerned departments have been kept on alert with full preparedness in anticipation of potential floods.
According to the district administration, a total of 46 flood relief camps have been set up in Varanasi. These include 37 camps in Tehsil Sadar, six in Rajatalab, and three in Pindra. The estimated capacity of these relief camps is 7,392 people. Additionally, 15 temporary flood relief camps have been prepared in Tehsil Sadar, with an estimated capacity of 3,785 people.
A total of 21 flood posts have been established in the district for monitoring the flood situation and conducting relief and rescue operations. These include seven wireless flood posts. The district administration has also identified areas potentially affected by floods; a total of 195 villages and localities in the district have been marked as flood-prone. These comprise 150 villages/localities in Sadar Tehsil, 24 in Rajatalab, and 21 in Pindra Tehsil.
