LUCKNOW, July 17 -- Almost eight years after staging one of its most significant national events, the Uttar Pradesh Table Tennis Association (UPTTA) returns to the national spotlight as it has been entrusted by the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) to host the 1st National Ranking Table Tennis Tournament of the 2026-27 season in Kanpur. In 2017, UPTTA conducted the National Ranking Tournament at Greater Noida. The championship, scheduled from August 16 to 23, marks a major moment for table tennis in Uttar Pradesh and for Kanpur as a growing hub for competitive sport in the state. The event holds important significance for the top paddlers of the country as participation of everyone is a must and happening almost two weeks after the Commonwealth TT Championship at New Delhi. The week-long event is expected to draw around 4,000 participants, including a large field of players across age groups and categories, plus coaches, technical officials and tournament staff from all corners of the country. Among the entrants will be India's top-ranked table tennis players, making the tournament an important early-season barometer of form and ranking for athletes aiming to accelerate their national standing ahead of selection windows and major international assignments. UPTTA's return as a host at this scale underscores the association's capacity built over years of staging high-profile competitions. Lucknow, the association's long-time base, previously hosted major national tournaments - most notably the 73rd Senior National and Inter State Table Tennis Championship in January 2012 - and even an international-level event when the city successfully organized the Asian Table Tennis Championship in 2009. Those experiences gave UPTTA the logistical know-how, volunteer networks and venue management expertise necessary for running tournaments that meet TTFI standards. Bringing the 1st National Ranking Tournament to Kanpur this year signals both continuity in administrative competence and a strategic expansion of the sport's footprint within the state. For players, national ranking events carry real competitive and career implications. Ranking points accumulated here will shape seedings at future national competitions and influence selection conversations for zonal camps and the national squad. "The timing early in the season gives athletes an opportunity to set a positive trajectory and established professionals can consolidate their positions, while emerging talents from Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring states can seize the chance to announce themselves on a larger stage," said UPTTA secretary, Arun Banerjee on Thursday. It was day of big wins in the District Football League 2026, at the Chowk Stadium here on Thursday. Lucknow Arrows Club defeated Divine Club 4-0 in the first match. Rishabh (28th and 36th minutes), Nitesh (40th minute), and Sufiyan (51st minute) were the scorers. In the second match, Spring Dale Club defeated Elite Club 5-0. Nitin (21st, 29th, and 46th minutes) scored three goals, whereas Ritesh (32nd minute) and Ayush (53rd minute) shared two goals between them....
