PRAYAGRAJ, Sept. 29 -- Police have registered a case against 37 people, including 12 named and 25 unidentified persons, following a dispute over garbage dumping at a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) centre in Sardar Patel Nagar, Ward No. 9 of Charwa Nagar Panchayat in Kaushambi. The case was registered on a complaint lodged by Nagar Panchayat executive officer Suryaprakash. Meanwhile, local women have submitted a separate complaint to the administration, accusing Nagar Panchayat employees and officials of misbehaviour, assault and intimidation during the protest. According to the Nagar Panchayat complaint, sanitation workers were transporting garbage collected from different wards to the MRF centre on Sunday when some residents protested and demanded that the facility be shifted elsewhere. Administrative officials and police reached the spot and pacified the protesters. However, the complaint alleged that after the officials left, some people abused and assaulted sanitation workers and threw stones at Nagar Panchayat vehicles. Windshields of two mini-tippers were damaged in the stone-pelting, while several employees, including Shivshankar Sahu, sustained injuries, officials alleged. The protesters were also accused of obstructing official work and threatening to set vehicles ablaze if garbage was brought to the centre again. Police booked Sanjay alias Pappu, Govind, Paras, Samar Singh, Dharmendra, Arvind, Radheshyam Patel, Shambhu, Suraj, Ranjit, Amit Prajapati and Jaswant, along with 25 unidentified people. Charwa SHO Dhirendra Singh said the matter was being investigated and further action would be taken on the basis of evidence. Meanwhile, women opposing the MRF centre submitted a complaint to the sub-divisional magistrate and the SHO, alleging that waste was not being disposed of scientifically and was instead being dumped in ponds and open areas.
