30 students fall ill after having mid-day meal at school in Baran
JAIPUR/BARAN, July 18 -- A total of 30 students fell ill allegedly after consuming a mid-day meal at a Government Higher Primary School in Baran district on Friday, officials said.
The incident took place at the school in Devpura Banjara village of Atru block after children complained of vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain and uneasiness shortly after eating the meal. The district administration rushed the affected students to the Government Primary Health Centre in Mothpur, where they were treated under medical supervision. Most of the children were discharged after first aid, while a few remained under observation, officials said.
District education officer (DEO) Sitaram Goyal visited the school and the hospital to assess the situation.
According to Goyal, 38 of the 43 enrolled students had consumed the mid-day meal served on Friday afternoon. Soon afterwards, around 30 children developed symptoms including vomiting, stomach pain and anxiety, prompting school authorities to alert the administration. Parents also rushed to the school after learning about the incident.
The DEO said the education department had sought details from the school regarding the preparation and distribution of the mid-day meal and directed officials to conduct an impartial inquiry. Food samples have been collected and sent for laboratory testing to ascertain the cause of the incident. "The exact reason behind the children's illness will be known only after the test reports are received," an official said. Additional district collector Bhanwarlal Janagal, block education officer Kalulal and tehsildar Anil Samariya also visited the hospital. They reviewed the treatment being provided to the children, instructed doctors to ensure the best possible medical care, and interacted with parents, assuring them that all necessary assistance was being provided. The district administration and education department have launched an investigation into the suspected food poisoning case.
