3 more held for killing, dismembering tigers in Shyampur forest
Haridwar, May 22 -- Three more people have been arrested in connection with the poisoning, killing and severing of limbs of two tigers in the Shyampur forest range, forest department officials said on Thursday. With this, the total number of arrests in the case has risen to four, while one accused remains absconding.
According to officials, the arrests were made from the outskirts of the forest area in Shyampur forest range by one of the five special teams constituted to investigate the sensitive case. The accused have been identified as Yusuf (45), Aashiq (40) and Juppy (40), residents of Gujjar Colony. Officials said two of them were traced after a combination of manual investigation and digital surveillance inputs. One accused, Aamir Hamja, is still on the run.
Divisional forest officer Swapnil Anirudh said, "Now a total of three arrests have been made in this case and the absconding accused will also be arrested soon. A notice has been served to Shyampur forest ranger Vinay Rathi, and a reply is awaited."
A departmental probe has also been initiated into the incident.Earlier on Wednesday evening, Forest minister Subodh Uniyal visited the Shyampur range in Haridwar forest division where the two tiger carcasses were recovered. Expressing shock over the incident, he directed officials to ensure strict action and prevent such incidents in future.
The minister said that no act of cruelty against wildlife would be tolerated and warned that if any departmental lapse is found, strict action will be taken against responsible officials. He was briefed on the investigation by Divisional forest officer Swapnil Anirudh and Sub divisional officer Poonam Kainthola regarding the incident that took place at Sajjanpur beat, compartment 9, in the Shyampur forest range, which is a buffer zone.
Officials said efforts are underway to trace the remaining accused and tighten surveillance in the forest area following the shocking case....
