LUCKNOW, June 11 -- Three residents of Lucknow were killed and 11 others, including seven children, were injured when an SUV carrying members of an extended family crashed into a divider on the Ganga Expressway near the Sambhal-Amroha border on Wednesday afternoon. The victims, all residents of Nakhhas locality in Lucknow, were returning home after a trip to Jammu & Kashmir when the accident occurred near the Kailadevi police station area of Sambhal district. According to police and eyewitnesses, the SUV rammed into the divider after the driver dozed off at the wheel. The impact left 11 occupants injured, five of them seriously. The injured were rushed to the district hospital in Sambhal before several were referred to higher medical centres for advanced treatment. Among the injured were Aamna (16), Abubakar (40), Kulsum (38), Sibra (12), Affan (8), Afifa (6), Umar (30), Hina (28), Junaira (15), Mohammad (17) and Hadiya (14). Abu Bakar, 40, succumbed to his injuries during treatment at a hospital in Sambhal. Hina, 28, wife of Umar, and Junaira, 15, died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Moradabad. An eyewitness, whose vehicle was travelling behind the SUV, told local police that the SUV suddenly veered into the divider. He also attributed the accident to driver fatigue.
