3 dead in Jammu bridge collapse
Jammu, May 3 -- Three construction workers died and another injured after an old bridge collapsed on Friday in Jammu's Bantalab area, officials said on Saturday.
They said while one worker, a mason, was rescued on Friday, three bodies were recovered from the debris on Saturday, following a nightlong search and rescue operation.
On Friday evening, four construction workers were trapped after an old bridge, adjoining an under construction bridge, collapsed in the Thuther area of Bantalab. Earlier, a mason, identified as Tarsem Lal, was rescued, while an operation was launched to rescue the remaining workers.
Police, army, SDRF and NDRF besides other officials worked through the night to locate the workers, a senior police officer said. "The rescue operation continued through the night with the help of bulldozers but we could not rescue three workers, whose bodies were found under the rubble," he said, adding that the entire operation concluded in the early hours of Saturday.
Additional district development commissioner, Jammu, Thakur Sher Singh, confirmed the deaths. "The rescue operation concluded around 1 am and the mason who has been rescued, is undergoing treatment at a hospital," he said.
Meanwhile, chief minister Omar Abdullah expressed condolences and directed authorities to conduct a detailed inquiry into the bridge collapse incident that claimed lives of three.
"The chief minister has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of three workers in the bridge collapse at Ban Talab, Jammu...He has directed a thorough inquiry into the incident to ascertain the cause and fix responsibility," said an official statement....
