Haridwar, Aug. 28 -- Taking cognisance of a protest by students of Bhagat Ram Modern School in Pauri district, the forest department has decided to fell three old and dangerous trees that were posing a risk to students and other pedestrians along the route leading to the school, officials said on Thursday. For the past few weeks, the school management had reportedly informed district administration and forest department officials about the danger posed by the trees along the pedestrian stretch from Bhagwan Valmiki Square to the BR Modern School premises. However, after no action was taken and one of the trees tilted further following heavy monsoon rainfall, the school management decided to intensify its efforts to draw the authorities' attention to the issue. On Tuesday, students, accompanied by the school band, took out a protest march from the school premises to the forest department office at Kandoliya, demanding immediate action. DP Mamgain, principal of Bhagat Ram Modern School, said the trees posed a serious threat to students, teachers, non-teaching staff and parents visiting the school. "When no cognisance was taken by the authorities, we decided to take the students to the forest department office in a march. We have now been given an assurance that the trees are finally being felled," Mamgain said.
